And now, Pinterest will be able to provide even more support on this front, with Shopify coming on board as a partner for the initiative.

As per Pinterest:

In collaboration with Shopify, the leading global commerce company, the Pinterest Inclusion Fund will upskill content producers from underrepresented communities with the necessary resources to optimize organic content and growth on the platform. The program launches in the US and Canada today, later this year in five new markets, Australia, Indonesia, India, Argentina and Mexico, and returns to six previous markets, US, Canada, Brazil, France, Germany, and the UK.”

The Inclusion Fund, which Pinterest initially launched in 2021, has provided support for over 150 content producers thus far, facilitating expanded offerings and opportunities in the app.

The aim of the program, as noted, is to provide support for small businesses, independent publishers and boutique creator agencies that are owned and operated by those from historically marginalized communities.

In the US and Canada, Pinterest says, this specifically means those “within the BIPOC, Disability, LGBTQIA+ and plus-size community”, though regional variations also mean that Pinterest can provide support to a broader range of creators from different backgrounds and groups to maximize support.

Applications are open to businesses that are at least 50% owned and operated by those from underrepresented communities, or stock 70% or more of their products from sources that support consumers from the same.

It’s a good initiative, and the addition of Shopify as a partner will provide more direct storefront support, helping more creators turn their creative vision into business reality.

Microsoft just kicked off a new era of PCs with Copilot+ https://kmar.media/microsoft-just-kicked-off-a-new-era-of-pcs-with-copilot/ https://kmar.media/microsoft-just-kicked-off-a-new-era-of-pcs-with-copilot/#respond Fri, 14 Feb 2020 03:09:18 +0000 https://essentials.pixfort.com/original/?p=1212 Microsoft is introducing an entirely new category of PCs, and they’re all centered around Copilot+. Amid bold claims of AI PCs from industry leaders like Intel, AMD, and Nvidia, Microsoft is kicking off the era of the AI PC with a new set of hardware requirements and software features that allow your PC to go beyond an AI chatbot.

The idea behind Copilot+ isn’t to have a few AI features. Instead, the dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) on a Copilot+ PC will run several language models in the background of Windows 11 — all the time. The models will scan you through everything you do on your PC to provide context when you want to prompt Copilot properly. Microsoft calls the feature Recall and says it’s like a “sensor for AI.”

This should mean that a Copilot+ PC can recall a line from a multipage document you scanned a few daysearlier, follow up on a promise you made in an email from the previous week, or track your web browsing to offer suggestions on websites and services you frequent. There’s an obvious privacy concern with all of this, but Microsoft says Copilot+ turns into an AI superpower when it’s running at full tilt.

The constant monitoring is the core of a Copilot+ PC, but the large AI computing power can enable more, according to Microsoft. We’ve seen dozens of creative tools that leverage AI, from Photoshop’s generative AI fill to Microsoft’s own AI image generation. With a Copilot+ PC, you could run these functions on your device, saving you time and limiting how often you have to go out to the cloud.

Microsoft just kicked off a new era of PCs with Copilot+

Microsoft is introducing an entirely new category of PCs, and they’re all centered around Copilot+. Amid bold claims of AI PCs from industry leaders like Intel, AMD, and Nvidia, Microsoft is kicking off the era of the AI PC with a new set of hardware requirements and software features that allow your PC to go beyond an AI chatbot.

In order to reach the status of Copilot+, devices need at least 40 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS) of AI processing power from the NPU. That’s a massive jump from what we’ve seen previously, with Intel’s Meteor Lake offering only 10 TOPS on the NPU. Perhaps Microsoft’s strict requirements explain why we’ve seen Intel investing in Lunar Lake so heavily, as well as AMD bolstering its Ryzen AI prowess.

Copilot+ PCs aren’t using chips from AMD or Intel, however. The first batch exclusively uses the Snapdragon X Elite or Snapdragon X Plus chip, both of which come with 40 TOPS of AI power. Qualcomm says these chips offer more than four times the AI power of competitors’ chips, while packing enough power to run games like Baldur’s Gate 3 at playable frame rates.

Although Copilot+ seems powerful, we’ve yet to see exactly what it can do in action. Microsoft says you’ll be able to turn off the always-on AI tracking, as well as go through snapshots and delete them individually. Hopefully, the new standards for AI on PC will go beyond just the background blur we’ve seen for the past year.

Google’s Removing its Chat Option from Google Business Listings https://kmar.media/googles-removing-its-chat-option-from-google-business-listings/ https://kmar.media/googles-removing-its-chat-option-from-google-business-listings/#respond Fri, 14 Feb 2020 02:39:53 +0000 https://essentials.pixfort.com/original/?p=1208 Google’s announced that it will be shutting down the chat and call history features on Google Business Profiles in July, as it moves to streamline its business tools.

“The what?” I hear you ask.

Yeah, it’s not a highly used element of the Google Business offering, but right now, users of Google Search, Maps and Shopping can get in touch with your business direct from the in-stream listings, by initiating a chat from the display.

Google Business chat is an optional element of your Google Business profile, which you need to specifically activate and/or deactivate for each Google platform, with an important proviso being that businesses have to reply to any messages within 24 hours.

That provides another, simple way for users to make contact, and could, at least in theory, help you generate more leads from your Google listings.

But evidently, it hasn’t proven popular.

I’d hazard a guess that the 24-hour time limit is one impediment, while it’s also quite possible that a lot of business owners didn’t know that it existed. But either way, it’s not seeing enough take-up to keep supporting it, so Google’s retiring the option as of July 31st, 2024.

As reported by Search Engine Land:

“Google will stop allowing new chats to be initiated starting on July 15, 2024 and then will totally disable the chat and call history features on July 31, 2024. You can download your chat and call history from Google Business Profiles, so you can store them somewhere. At some point, Google will delete the history.”

Again, it’s not a major element, so the impact won’t be significant. But if you have been using this feature, it’s worth noting that it’s going away, and that users will no longer be able to initiate a chat from Google surfaces.
